While making a detailed review on Nexus 5X and 6P we thoroughly looked into the new Android Marshmallow platform that was pre-installed in those particular devices. There are battery life improvements, greater app permission controls, standardized support for fingerprint scanners, USB-C support and new Google Now features, being all part of a mix that makes this an exciting offer for users. It was announced during those newcomers presentation that many of Nexus devices are planned to be updated to Android Marshmallow.

Which phones are getting the Android Marshmallow updates?

But now it goes way further! We are seeing a roll out of the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update which is announced by many manufacturers. It seems that the release process for Android updates is more complicated than that for iOS update. Just because an update has been launched that doesn't necessarily mean you'll have instant access to it.

There are quite a number of rumors on the web as to the brands that supposedly soon issue Marshmallow update for specific models. Let’s unpack the data into reliable parts.

 Android 6 updates


While 5X and 6P have Marshmallow preinstalled, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9, Nexus Player and the whole range of Android One smartphone are in the process of getting the new platform right now.


Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ are scheduled for this December. 

The preliminary Marshmallow roll out plan suggests that Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge will come next, January-February 2016.

Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy S5 are in plan, but without specific dates yet.

We can’t find reliable data whether or not models older than Galaxy S5 will get Marshmallow platform, but it’s highly possible for Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3.


The company claims that One M9 and One M8 are the first ones to go Marshmallow, that would be by the end of this year. The possible roll out in 2016: HTC One M9+, HTC One E9, HTC One ME, HTC One E8, HTC One M8 EYE, HTC Butterfly 3, HTC Desire 826, HTC Desire 820 and HTC Desire 816. 


The company goes Marshmallow starting with their Z line of smartphones and goes further with other series. Xperia Z2, Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3+, Z5, Z5 Premium, Z5 Compact, Xperia X5, C5 Ultra, M4 Aqua, C4 are all the lucky ones.


LG G4 is now being updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, while the company is keeping its list short: LG G3, LG G Stylo, LG G Pad 10.1, LG G Flex 2.

But then again, there is no big official announcement from LG yet, so it might just take a little longer for LG owners to find out the good news.

Motorola’s list

Moto Turbo, Moto Maxx, Moto X Pure Edition (USA, 2nd gen), Moto X (2nd Gen), Moto X Pure Edition (USA, 3rd gen), Moto G (regular and LTE, both 2nd-gen), Moto X Style, Moto X Play.


OnePlus 2 and OnePlus One will be receiving the Android update before the end of March 2016. It's not clear on the timing of the OnePlus X update just yet.


The company has confirmed that in the near future (most like by the end of first half of 2016) there will be models getting Marshmallow update: ZenFone 2, ZenFone 2 Deluxe, ZenFone 2 Laser, PadFone S, ZenFone Selfie.

You need to be aware though, it doesn't mean the update will be available for you immediately – your mobile network may have some work to do before you receive the over the air update.
