The black GZ-R50 Quad-Proof HD Camcorder from JVC is designed for European video standards and captures Full HD 1920x1080 video to 16GB of internal memory or available SD/SDHC/SDXC media cards. The camera straddles the line between action camera and normal camcorder. This "quad-proof" camera boasts an IP58 rating, which means that it can be submerged in up to 16.4' of water for half an hour, and is resistant to dust. It also is shockproof and freeze resistant. This combination of features distinguishes it from an everyday camera, while the 40x optical zoom lens, 3" flip-out touchscreen LCD, and full size SD card slot distinguishes the camera from an action camera.

At the heart of the imaging system on the GZ-R50BE is a 1/5.8", 2.5MP CMOS sensor that is back-illuminated for better low-light performance. To help allows as much light as possible to pass through the lens, the camera features an f/1.8 maximum aperture when the lens is zoomed out to its widest setting. The camera records Full HD (1920 x 1080) video, and can take up to 2MP still photos at the same time as recording video. Once done filming for the day, you can simply remove the card from the camera and place it in a card reader on your computer or even connect the camera directly to your computer via USB to download from the internal memory. Included with the camera is basic solutions software for Windows. In addition, the 24 Mbps AVCHD format the camera records in is supported by many popular editing programs found on both Windows and Apple, including Apple Final Cut X, and later versions of Apple iMovie.
